Under 8s

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR U8S FESTIVAL 20TH MARCH PLEASE READ.....

Good afternoon all,

I have pleasure in contacting you all regarding this Sundays forthcoming Under 8's Festival of Rugby.

As usual the festival will be held at Wellington RFC and as most of you will know we are not blessed with lots of parking, as such we are using a local factory's facilities for the day and will have marshal's out to direct traffic and walkers from the car park safely to the club, it is only about a 5 minutes walk.

I would suggest that yourselves and your parents aim to arrive with us between 09:15 and 09:30 to ensure everyone is on site ready for the day to begin.

Registration for the event will be in the largest of three tents located behind the Posts at the BBQ end of the main pitch, please could a coach from each team confirm there arrival and discuss any potential problems regarding player numbers at this stage. Registration will be open from 09:45.

At 10:15 we will have a Coaches and referee's meeting to go over the finer points, but the festival will be played to RFU regulations and playing rules. We are hopeful that we will be in a position to cover all of the refereeing for the day, but I would ask that if things do not run to plan that a few of you make yourselves available to cover the odd game.

There will be refreshments, bar, BBQ, cake and sweet stall. We will have plenty of qualified first aiders on site including a "Main" point of contact who will also be housed in one of the tents behind the posts if required, but I should state the all sides should have a qualified first aider present with there team at all times.

Matches will be 5 minutes each way with a 2 minute half time break, the first games will kick off at 10:45 and we expect to be all done no later than 14:30.

As always there will be a medal for every player taking part in the festival with a maximum of 10 (6 players and 4 subs) per team.

Finally we will not be charging for parking or entry to our festival, however on the may gate there will be volunteers selling programmes which we would encourage as many parents to purchase as possible to go towards our fund raising for the day.

If any of you have any questions regarding the day please do not hesitate in getting in touch with me and I will be as prompt with replies as I can, my contact number is also below if required.

Yours in rugby

22nd November @ Crewkerne

Tor under 8's turned up in force on a blustery cold day to take on Crewkerne and immediately continued their great run of form.  The team are learning that there is far more to playing rugby than a burst of energy on a Sunday morning.  All the players demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, team work and respect for each other and the referee.  Crewkerne provided strong opposition so Tor had to be at their best.  Charlie Webb,  Josh Fairbrother, Charlie Jenssen, Sylvie Burrows and Oliver Wiggly all running well with the ball with some excellent off loads to Oscar Davey, Finlay Norris, Oscar Bartlett and  Charlie Fouracres.  As Crewkerne pressed, Tor showed their usual great defensive determination with great tagging from Robbie Armstrong, George Partlow, Raffael Van Duin and Jacob Hicks-Keeley.  The player of the week this week was Marcus Haigh, who ran well and also backed up those running ahead of him, scoring by being available for off load.

Another great weekend of Rugby for Tor, with all the players enjoying themselves, which ultimately is what it's all about!

15th November

Some stunning play this week from Tor under 8's in a match against Bridgewater & Albion RFC, that was truly a pleasure to watch.  Split into 3 teams, they have clearly been working hard in training and it was great to see them put all they have learnt into practice against the determined opposition.

In one team, both Sam and Charlie W ran incredibly well with ball with some great supportive play from Josh and Oscar B.  This enabled Tor to maintain momentum and recycle the ball quickly and accurately.  Charlie J and Charlie G and Josh demonstrated how well the team have learnt about the need for a strong defensive line with some impressive last ditch tackles.  A great display from this team and a day where they all played in the true spirit of the game.

In the other team they were self-organised, with Freddie, Marcus and Sylvie each taking on the role of captain and Charlie F and Ollie completing the team of 5.  A very close 3 games ensued with just some handling errors from Bridgwater being taken full advantage of by the Tor team to secure victory.  They all showed some great passing and running with the ball, particularly Freddie who zigzagging through the opposition a spectacle to behold!

The final team put on a great display.  Offloads were spot on and there was great competing for the ball on the ground.  Top individual tries from George, Raffael, Hollie and Finlay were scored, with Oscar leading the team well. There were big smiles all round with a result of won 2 and lost 1 by the close of play.

This week's winner of the Silver Boot was Charlie G, who's defensive performance in tackling was full of commitment and enabled his team to turn over the ball and score tries.  Well done to all for some super and entertaining play.

Sunday 11th October brought the first opportunity of the season for Tor Under 8’s to demonstrate how much they have improved since they first started playing together last year.  They welcomed their old and respected rivals Cheddar to a home match tournament and the first fixture of the season.  Having previously competed with a smaller group, this year Tor U8s welcomed 3 new players in Marcus, Sylvia and Oscar and were therefore able to field 3 complete teams of 6 players which equaled the 3 Cheddar teams.  Supported by their coaches Dave, Jon and Marty, set out to use all the skills they have learned to win their matches.

Showing impressive progress all the players worked hard to stay inside the boundaries of the pitch by passing the ball back in-field when forced wide and there was a definite desire to keep the ball going forward.  The set play in the restart, both from the centre of the pitch and in the line-out, was well organised and led by the team captains, with the coaches able to stay back and let the players dictate the pace of play.

Playing 3 matches against strong opposition from Cheddar Tor instantly got into their running with some exceptional individual performances and some great tries from Josh, Charlie J and Oscar D.  The team set up to show all they had learned about organisation and the defensive abilities of the team were on display.   Some great last gasp defensive tags from Oliver, Ben and George.  Tor payers all engaged the opposing players stood strong in defensive line and also organised themselves so as to keep onside and force Cheddar to run back towards their own half.  Tor showed that they had learned to use the space of the pitch, passing along the line and backing each other up so as to keep possession when tagged by opposing players.  In the other team, both big and little Charlies, Sam and Freddie demonstrated brilliant offloads when tackled, and all ran in excellent tries.  The tackling was disciplined and relentless; the Tor players held their positions well and rarely allow the Cheddar players through.

The new players were teamed together with the three experienced players of Raffael, Jacob and Finlay who rose to the occasion and helped the team come together.  Although they lost the first match to Cheddar, they regrouped and continued to improve, coming closer the in the second match despite losing Raffael to injury in the first half.  By the third game they showed good spirit and team play, supporting the ball runner and passing down the line, allowing Sylvia to score a superb try in the corner which earned her the Silver Boot for Player of the Week.

Both Tor and Cheddar players demonstrated the finest traditions of rugby, showing respect and discipline towards both the Referees and the other players. With the new players making amazing progress today and the experienced players once again showing great spirit, this was an excellent start and bodes well for the rest of the season.  Go Tor!

Away matches at Chard..

Tor under 8's playing their last game of tag rugby before they move onto contact next season put together their best team performance of this season.  Tor's first opponents were Crewkerne, Tor got off to a flying start with 4 first half tries from Xander Hallett and 1 from Oliver Hitt.  Some great defensive tagging from Jessica Sturgess, only allowing Crewkerne 4 first half tries.  Second half started the same as the first with another 2 tries from Xander Hallett and 1 from Alex Bolton.  Crewkerne managed 4 second half tries to leave the final score 8-8.

In the second match of the day Tor took on a very strong Chard team, where Chard came out of the blocks very hard with 4 tries in the first half to Tor's 1, scored by Xander Hallett.  The second half Tor dug deep and put in great performance with Amelia Sturgess scoring 1 try and Xander Hallett with another 3.  Great defensive work from Finley Morris and George Ross limited Chard to 3 tries.  Final score 7-5 to Chard.

The Tor players have all enjoyed this season playing for Tor Rugby Mini and Juniors and are really looking forward to playing contact rugby next season, starting on the 6th September.

8/3/2015

Due to illnesses numbers were slightly lower than normal but those that were there trained hard on support, play, tagging and passing.  Amelia showed great potential and won player of the week!  I look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday.
