TOR U9s 22nd November

Tor U9s away to Crewkerne  22/11/15
A team of 10 Tor players made the trip to Crewkerne
The match got off at a cracking pace, Crewkerene scoring first with great pace down the wing catching out the Tor defence
Tor fired back straight away with a Xander try, the result of great team work with Oliver,Alex, and Henry all getting involved –Oliver taking some great quick ball from excellent offloads from his team mates, Tor stormed into the lead with further tries from Oliver and Henry
Crewkerne regrouped and launched a prolonged spell of excellent attacking held at bay by some brilliant Tor defence Lucie,Jack and Amelia making text book tackles to hold them at bay
For the second half Lucie decided it was about time she got on the score sheet supported by Sam,Finley and Olivia they worked the ball into space for her to finish a move that saw the ball move the width of the pitch Lucie breaking the final tackle and diving to score in the corner
The Tackle of the week award for the second time in a row went to Amelia showing excellent technique to pull off tackles worthy of more senior players!
Tor really stepped up another level this week and were worthy equals of a strong Crewkerne team
The entire team won “player of the match” - they all made their coaches John and Andrew very proud indeed!

Tor U9s 15thNovember

Tor U9’s

A team of 11 Tor players travelled down the road to take on the Bridgwater U9s, it was 6 a-side with rolling substitutes making sure everyone had a good run out over the two games Tor started brightly playing well as a team with great support play, great runs and quick offloads from George and then Oliver put  Xander clear for the first score, Henry followed up with a scorching run down the wing showing his true potential and bagging the first of a personal hat trick Bridgwater fired back with two great scores of their own so it was all to play for in the second half. On came Jack and with his trade mark direct running broke through tackles time and time again –unlucky not to cross the line himself he set up Xander for a quality diving score. Tor ran out narrow winners the whole team getting stuck in Jessica winning the coveted tackle of the week award!

Tor U9s- away fixture to Wells U9s 25th Oct 2015

Bright sunshine and happy faces greeted a squad of 11 Tor U9 players taking part in their first away match of the season at Wells.
Tor U9s looked to build on experienced gained from their  1st  game of full contact-remembering the “flying duck” formation for attacking restarts and flew over the line for the first try of the game from Zander ,Wells fired back with a try of their own from the restart – the first few scores for both sides followed this pattern until Tor players added confidence to their tackling technique and started to make the tackles stick- halting or pushing attacks’ out wide into touch
Just before the break Oliver was first to pounce on a loose ball and using great passing skills got it out wide to fast approaching support players..The ball then passed through four pairs of hands to score a true “team try” in the corner.
Super subs came on for the second half and following individual tries from Zander,Jack and Henry the defence had to step up as Wells fought back with some great skills of their own getting over the Tor line several times  -Match one Honours even
A short break then it was time for the second game- every Tor team member dug in remembering to “hold the line” and work together covering gaps to stem the tide from a Wells side picking up where they had left off – again Oliver won a loose ball and distributed it to close support – Olivia making sure she was on his shoulder grew in confidence making three meaningful carries into contact , Lucie not to be outdone did the same-backed up by looping  fast runs from Finlay and Sam, and direct running from Amelia  and Jessica  saw Tor back in striking distance of the Wells line, Alex making the final pass to put Zander through again for another great team try.
Tor battled on throughout the second half match improving as a team, looking happy with the ball in hand –no panic passing! And scored several more tries but couldn’t stop the strong running Wells team taking the victory.
A great true team performance from Tor –every player getting involved. Well done!

11th Oct  Match Tor U9s Vs Cheddar U9s @ Tor

A strong squad of 10 players turned out to take part in our first match of the season it was time to put what we had been learning in the last 4 weeks  or so  into practice ..
Cheddar were a man down  and I was very proud that all the Tor players stuck their hands up straight away to help cheddar out Alex Bolton jumping at the chance to play against his team mates and score a cracking try against them in the first half!
Tor had the making of Cheddar eventually- a hat-trick of tries  from Xander Hallet  sealing a first game victory but what was more important was the confidence increasing minute by minute from the players -great runs from Jack Vowles  and Lucie Harmsworth  had them getting on the score sheet helped by supporting play from Finley Morris and Henry Stacey , Sam King  confused the opposition ball in hand with his darting runs into contact,Oliver Hitt took  on the role of organising evcryone at the restarts and relished the challenge of taking the ball into contact
Defensively the team grew and grew with confidence all players got stuck in making tackles- Olivia Pearce after getting knocked over making her first tackle showed true team spirit by getting up and getting stuck in again using the "ring of steel " to good effect  but it wasn't  enough to keep Cheddar from taking victory in the second match
So honours equal but so much to be proud of well done everyone!

Next week we will be practising our restarts -(attack and defence) and of course more tackling practise ..against each other so bring your gumshields !

 20th Sept 2015 -Training @ Tor U9s
A group of 14 eager players turned out for training and we had a great session-on the menu this week was tower of power, ring of steel as we took on tackle bags cheek to cheek!-those poor tackle bags took a right pasting by the end of the session!...but don't be put off safety is always top of the list

Warm up games honing passing, catching and communication helped bond the group and a cracking team is developing - Please can all remember to bring gum shields next week as we take our tackling a step further ready for our first matches

Come and join in more the merrier tell your mates!

13th Sept 2015-Training @ Tor U9s

It was great to see a full team turn up again -the sun came out for the full session which started off with some fun warm up games then John coached a small sided  game the aim of which was to encourage the players to run onto the ball in attack (no forward passing!) and be in front of the attackers in defence (no offside!)
I ran a break out area with two attackers taking on a defender (me!) encouraging running into space and passing to close support
A falling over relay race added to the fun  before we finished off with introducing "grab and hold" tackles to our game of "touch"
It was a pleasure to coach a group of kids obviously  having fun smiling and laughing all morning!
John and I can see a great  team forming and cant wait for next week !

5th Sept 2015-Training @ TorU9s

It was the first session of the new season and great to see some new faces joining in
We started off with some passing and  catching practice ,then a fun game of "Chaos" touch- Jon ran that whilst I ran a "break out" area honing passing, communication and learning how to fall over without hurting yourself and "pop" the ball up  -
(Over the next 4 weeks we will be introducing the U9s to contact it will be in a staged and controlled way with the emphasis always on safety)

To finish off we had a game of touch introducing the ideas of defence and attack

It was a really good session and both Jon and I could see the start of a exciting team

Players will need gum shields for next week!

Under 9s 12-4-2015
CHARD ,CREWCERNE and BRIDPORT away at Chard

A bright spring morning witnessed a bright start from the Tor under 9s Olivia set the tone with the first contact of the first match against Chard-a crunching text book tackle, the Tor team followed her example and held a strong Chard team for most of the half.
Using the slope to their advantage in the second half Tor crossed the line twice through impressive support play from Charlie and Callum  adventurous passing from Harry superbly finished off  with electrifying pace from Jack, although Chard ran out eventual winners the Tor team could hold their heads high and the end of a tough match.
During the second match against Bridport Isabelle lived up to her new nick name of "slippy lizzy" with some sublime tackle breaking direct running and well timed off loads setting up forays deep  into Bridports territory-  support came from Olivia and the ball was soon out wide for Jack to go over again,Tor were always playing catch up following two quick tries from the opposition, but they never  gave up and again were gallant in defeat.
In the final game against Bridport the illusive victory was not to be despite brilliant  defence from Callum reading the game spotting the line breaks and delivering try saving tackles backed up by Jack they kept Tor in with a sniff but again the bigger squad with fresher legs took control in the second half and Bridport ran out victors

It was a brilliant display from the Tor squad who had not  played a match for 4 weeks -they worked as a real team supporting each other and have come on such a long long way from the beginning of the season -smiles all round  at the end of the morning a lot of fun was had ! ( oh and Haribo!)

WELL DONE!

Under 9s -15/03/2015

A good turn out this week with a new face joining in and having fun
Games of  "Zombies" and "Pirates" were chosen to warm up and have fun,the tackle bags came out and Isabel won the tackle of the week award again! new team member Daniel won the player of the week trophy for getting stuck in ...great running skills were displayed by all team members completely embrassing the coaches in a game of touch to finish the training session

Next week we will be concentrating on contact skills so don't forget gum shields!

Under 9s - 08/3/2015

This week after  some fun warm up  games of seeing who could run the fastest backwards we set up a wide practice area with score zones in the corners -the aim apart from making the coach's (Dave and Andrew run around out of breath more than usual) was  to encourage passing/running into space using the whole of the pitch.

Tackle bags were used this week not just for tackling practice but to provide obstacles to be jumped over before passing the ball in a fun game of touch!

We also walked through some rucks and mauls as this group on moving up into the U10s next season will be adding these elements of rugby to their matches ...

Next week is training again at Tor turn up for a 10.30 am start and treat your Mums to free hot drinks and biscuits provided by the Dads in the kitchen..!

Welcome to the Under 9s -01/3/2015

Last week we were away to North Dorset it was wet muddy and cold but a scratch team of Tor regulars and a few borrowed players from North North Dorset put up a gritty show playing tough sides from North Dorset and Weymouth

This week is was training at Tor and  we had a good turn out
First up was some warm up games of touch encouraging quick accurate passing /catching whilst looking for space

Then it was some fun exercises practising taking the ball into a tackle while the supporting player timed their run to take the pop up pass at speed.

The tackle bags came out for some tackling practise to hone head/shoulder positions ...concentrating on  the old favourite "tower of power" and getting some powerful low tackles in to push the bag along in the "tackle bag relay race" game...Isabel putting in some awesome tackles!

Then we put it all into a 20 minute practise game... full contact so gum shields in and listening to the ref ..who is always right!
It was great fun ...I lost track of time playing .... the teams really clicked in the last 10 minutes or so with some fast flowing rugby and cracking tackles

Next week its more training at Tor ...training starts at 10.30 but coaches will be at the ground from around 10.00am all welcome ..bring your friends get muddy have fun!
